Orange and Date Bread

1 cup of butter or margarine, soft
2 cups of sugar
3 eggs
4 cups of flour
1 teaspoon of baking soda
1 teaspoon of salt
1 1/3 cups of buttermilk
1 cup of chopped dates
1 cup of chopped pecans or walnuts
1 tablespoon of grated orange rind
Glaze
1/4 cup of orange juice
1/2 cup of sugar
2 tablespoons of grated orange rind

Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs, beat well. Combine dry ingredients and add alternately with the buttermilk. Fold in the walnuts, dates and orange rind. Pour into two 8 1/2 inch greased and floured pans and bake at 350ºF.  for about an hour. Can be made ahead and frozen.
