Spiced Slices

1/2 cup of margarine or butter
1/2 cup of shortening
2 1/4 cups of all purpose flour
1/2 cup of sugar
1/2 cup of packed brown sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon of ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon of baking soda
1/2 teaspoon of vanilla
1/4 teaspoon of ground nutmeg
1/4 teaspoon of ground cloves
1/2 cup of toasted sliced almonds, finely chopped

In a mixing bowl beat the margarine and shortening with an electric mixer on medium to high-speed for 30 seconds. Add about half of the flour, the sugars, egg, cinnamon, soda, vanilla, nutmeg, and cloves. Beat until thoroughly combined. Beat in the remaining flour. Stir in nuts. Shape into two 7 inch rolls. Wrap, chill 5 - 24 hours. Cut into 1/4 inch slices. Place 1 inch apart on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake in a 375ºF. oven about 8 minutes or until the edges are golden. Cool on cookie sheet for 1 minute. Remove, cool on rack. Makes 60

Whole Wheat Spiced Slices: Prepare as above, except reduce all purpose flour to 1 1/2 cups and add 3/4 cup of whole wheat flour. Before chilling, roll shaped dough in 2 tablespoons of toasted wheat germ.
