Finnish Coffee Cake

1/2 cup of scalded milk
1/2 cup of butter
1/4 cup of sugar
1 dry yeast softened in 1/2 c. warm water
3 cardamom seeds pounded in a cloth
2 beaten eggs
3 1/2 cups of flour
1/2 teaspoon of  salt

Combine milk, butter, sugar and salt. Cool to lukewarm. Add yeast, eggs, flour and cardamom. Mix well with large spoon. Place in bowl, cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size (about 1 hour). Punch down and let rise in cool place 30 minutes. Divide in 6 pieces. Braid 3 strips together and place in greased bread pans. Bake at 375ºF. for 25 to 30 minutes. Brush with icing of 1 cup powdered sugar and 1 1/2 teaspoons milk. Sprinkle with nutmeat and cherries.
